Currently, the figure of factories in Thailand that have achieved Industry 4.0 standards is only 5-6%, while the rest only operates in Industry 3.0 or lower. However, there is already a movement toward Industry 5.0 where humans work alongside robots as 435,000 industrial robots are expected to be installed worldwide, with the number projected to 518,000 in 2024.* Hence it is important for Thai manufacturing sector to speed up the transform and become Industry 4.0-compatible as soon as possible.
Realizing this urgent need, the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (Nectec) is collaborating with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) with a goal to increase at least 20% of the country's factories to reach Industry 4.0 standards by 2024. According to executive director of Nectec Dr. Chai Wutiwiwatchai, Nectec has established the Sustainable Manufacturing Centre (SMC) in the Eastern Economic Corridor in 2021 and gathered expert researchers to boost Thailand’s industrial competitiveness through 5 services: assessment of factories' Industry 4.0 readiness, skills development, consultation, basic industrial platforms, and a testbed. Chairman of the FTI Supant Mongkolsuthree has also remarked that 5G, IoT, cloud, big data, cybersecurity, blockchain, automation, AI as well as augmented and virtual reality will become key trends in the manufacturing industry in the coming years.
