The surface treatment industry has revealed another groundbreaking innovation. Recently, a team of researchers from Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) which includes Dr. Jin Chul Kim, Dr. Young il Park, and Dr. Ji-Eun Jeong, has introduced a new self-healing protective coating material developed from commercial polymer and photothermal dyes. This coating material can self-heal when being exposed to sunlight as the light energy will be converted to thermal energy and repeat the dissociation and recombination of polymer’s chemical bonds on any surface.
In addition to the ability to repair itself after being exposed to the sun or near infrared (Near infrared: NIR) in sunlight at the wavelengths of 1,000 to 1,100 nm., this new coating material is also highly stable with great protective property and transparency. This is highly desirable as it will not change the colors of the vehicles, and its usage can be extended to other applications such as smartphones, computers, and construction materials in the future.
Coating materials are a part of technologies in the industry. Many more chemical, surface paints and coatings service providers are exhibiting at Surface & Coatings 2023. The following companies are leading exhibitors who you can connect at Surface & Coatings 2023.
