The medical industry has been incorporating 3D printing technology to advance patient treatment for many years. However, the traditional mass production of medical devices or prosthetics has not been able to accommodate individual patient’s unique requirements or complex needs of particular medical devices. To overcome this challenge, the team of researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK has developed the technique that combines computer algorithm with multi-material 3D printing to design and manufacture pixel by pixel objects, as well as a new high-resolution characterization technique called "3D orbitSIMS" to create prosthetics that are both flexible and durable such as bone joints made from metal and silicone, or sophisticated medical tools with specific functions. The new innovative techniques also provide bacterial resistance feature that could lead to less unfavorable immune responses from the patients, and effective stem cell transplant without requiring the use of antibiotics.*
