The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of automation, robotics and smart factory technology to the unprecedented level. According to the Economic Intelligence Center (EIC), Thailand's import value of manufacturing automation and industrial robots was only 2% per year during 2016-2019. However, the higher rate of the pandemic since last year has forced many factories to halt to comply with the lockdown policies. Hence, the import value of manufacturing automation systems and industrial robots has risen over 7% per year to 1.84 billion baht in 2020. The rate of import of these systems jumped 40% in the first five months this year compared to the same period last year, with automotive, electronics and food processing industries being the major industries with significant investment in automation and industrial robots.
In addition to the automation and robots, what other measure would enable safe factory operation? The Centre for the Administration of the Situation due to the Outbreak of the Communicable Disease Coronavirus has issued the “Bubble and Seal” measure for the factories and labor camps to safeguard against the contagion and prevent the spread of the virus, which will help production lines to continue as well as Thailand’s economic movement. |
